چکیده

Endozoochory is a mutualistic interaction between plants and animals. Such relationship has rarely been examined in the Eurasian otter Lutra lutra. This study aimed to assess use electivity of fruit by this carnivore, along with viability ingested seeds. Otter spraints were collected from River Bullaque (Guadiana basin, central Spain) June September 2018-2019. A high occurrence (> 40%) was found during September. Otters only one plant species: Iberian bushweed Flueggea tinctoria (Phyllanthaceae); whereas seeds belonged four apple mint Mentha suaveolens (Lamiaceae), common hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, dog rose Rosa canina elmleaf blackberry Rubus ulmifolius (three Rosaceae species). According environmental availability, otters displayed avoidance for rose, neutral selection preference blackberry. Germination unsuccessful seeds, germination highest (37%; 49% blackbird Turdus merula, well-known frugivorous appear display an ecological role as seed dispersers riparian vegetation fresh waters. These findings provide insights into endozoochorous co-evolution Carnivora.

Structure of the mitochondrial control region of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra; Carnivora, Mustelidae): patterns of genetic heterogeneity and implications for conservation of the species in Italy.

In this study we determined the complete sequence of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). We then compared these new sequences with orthologues of nine carnivores belonging to six families (Mustelidae, Mephitidae, Canidae, Hyaenidae, Ursidae, and Felidae). The comparative analyses identified all the conserved regions previously found in mammals. The ...

Hepatocellular adenoma in a Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra)

A 7-year-old female Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) at the Seoul Grand Park, Korea, died after displaying depression, anorexia, weight loss and rough skin for several days. At necropsy, a solitary friable round mass, which was approximately 12 x 9 x 5 cm and mottled dark red and yellow, was found bulging from the right hepatic lobe. Microscopically, the nonencapsulated, poorly circumscribed mass w...

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) as a potential host for rickettsial pathogens in southern Italy

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis and rickettsiosis are zoonotic tick-borne diseases of canids caused by the intracellular obligate bacteria Ehrlichia canis and Rickettsia species respectively. In this study, we investigated using standard and real-time PCR and sequencing, the occurrence and molecular characterization of E. canis and Rickettsia species in the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) from the s...

Quantification of perphenazine in eurasian otter (Lutra lutra lutra) urine samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Perphenazine enanthate has been used in wild animals as a tranquilizer during the period of adaptation to new environments to reduce stress, mortalities and injuries. A gas chromatographic procedure for the quantitative measurement of perphenazine in otter urine has been developed and validated. The method involved an enzymatic hydrolysis with beta-glucuronidase-arylsulfatase from Helix pomatia...

Genetic diversity of the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) population in Israel.

The Israeli population of Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) marks the Palearctic southern boundary of the species' distribution in the Levant. During the 20th century, the otter population in Israel experienced a dramatic decline due to anthropogenic habitat alterations. Currently, the otter population in Israel is estimated at about 100 individuals and defined as "Critically Endangered". The aim of...
